Portal

Background

Portal was a game released in 2007 alongside TF2 and HL2 in the Orange Box. While this game has a story, the main reason people adore this game is because of the unique concept. Originally this concept was created by Nuclear Monkey and when they revealed their game at a gaming showcase a Valve employee was so impressed by it that they hired the people at Nuclear Monkey. Portal was based off the game concept Nuclear Monkey although it was very different in many ways. The team went on to be so successful that they even made a sequel with Portal 2.

Story

A test subject wakes up in a glass cage and doesn't know who she is or why she's there. Then she hears a voice coming from the speakers in the room commanding her to do complete things called "test chambers". She has no choice but to listen to the robot and does the test chambers. She's then introduced to the a device called the Portal Gun. This isn't an actual gun though. It shoots 2 portals that include an orange and blue one. She then uses the Portal Gun to complete the rest of the test chambers until she gets to the last one. It's revealed that she won't be needed anymore and is sent on an elevator to a burning waste. The test subject prevails though when she uses the Portal Gun to escape the burning pit. The voice pleads her to go back saying that it was all a harmless prank. The voice even tried to bargain her with cake while she was going through the facility but she didn't stop, eventually reaching an end. It turns out that this voice is a giant robot called GLaDOS.
It's revealed that GLaDOS has killed all the employees in the test facility. They were experimenting with the robot but the it released a deadly neurotoxin that killed all employees and left the robot with test subjects in a cold sleep. The robot then used the test subjects for its own amusement and apparently this test subject is the last person left. The final test subject then gets shot at by multiple rockets but she's able to send them back at the robot with the portals. The robot gets defeated with its own rockets and a huge hole in the ceiling opens, sucking them out and into what turns out to be the parking lot of the facility. We then see the unconscious test subject outside of the building think that all is over until we see her getting moved. Pulled back into the facility by something or someone.

Gameplay

The Portal Gun is the main mechanic in Portal. The Portal Gun can shoot a orange portal or a blue portal. When both are placed, walking through one will take you to another. All levels in the game are puzzles with there being no immediate danger to the player. The players goal is to figure out the puzzle and get out of the test chamber. You will also need to make use of the grabbing of objects and being able to use the objects to your advancetage. You may need to place a cube on a floor button to keep a door open or use a cube to jump onto it and get to inaccessible places. There's also a CO-OP mode in the sequel, Portal 2. With a whole new set of puzzles, the CO-OP mode makes use of two players with four portals in total. This makes the puzzle solving a lot more complicated and longer since the puzzles are designed for 4 portals to be used at a time.
